A Brief History of Our Favorite Time of Day: Happy Hour!

Last updated 6 years ago

Throughout history, beverages have served as the perfect way to bring people together. From tea and wine to beer and Coca-Cola, friends and family members have always shared conversations over a few drinks. Today, happy hour provides the perfect environment for relaxing after a hard day of work, enjoying your favorite drinks, and spending quality time with your friends. Happy hour also plays an important role in American history:

  • Many people credit the origin of the term “happy hour” to the United States Navy during the 1920s. Occasionally, on-ship sailors had some downtime where they could play games, watch boxing and wrestling matches, and drink together. This downtime helped sailors relax and have fun while taking a break from their normal stresses and worries. This was the sailors’ happy hour!
  • Back on land, the Prohibition era left people unable to order drinks with their meals at their favorite restaurants. During this time, speakeasies opened as secret establishments where people could drink. These establishments started holding cocktail hours before dinner so diners could enjoy some drinks before heading out for their meals. These cocktails hours started to be known as happy hours.
  • After the ban on alcohol was lifted, happy hour became even more popular and well-known. Restaurants began holding happy hours between 4 and 7 pm, after the typical work shift would end. This generated great business for restaurants, and these restaurants quickly became common hangouts for employees and friends after a long day at work.
  • Happy hour is still popular today, though over 20 states have laws banning happy hour drink specials. States like California, Nevada, and Arizona have stayed true to the happy hour tradition, though, letting diners enjoy a variety of drink and appetizer specials after work.

Here at Kabuki Japanese Restaurant, happy hour is our favorite time of the day. From 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. every weekday, our diners can enjoy an assortment of deals on our delicious drinks and dishes. Visit our website to view our happy hour menu! See you soon!
