The Art of Pairing Drinks with Sushi

Last updated 5 years ago

Sushi has quickly become one of the most popular cuisine choices for diners of all ages. People from around the world have welcomed this Japanese specialty with open minds and hungry stomachs. Japanese restaurants also provide a great atmosphere for dining and spending time with friends. Sushi happy hours can be the perfect way to unwind after work. Here are some tips on how to pair drinks with sushi during happy hour:

  • Sake. This traditional beverage is a Japanese type of wine, yet its fermentation process is very similar to that of beer.  Sake typically has a sweet taste and can be served either hot or cold. Because sushi and nigiri also feature rice, they are usually not paired with sake. This delicious Japanese wine can be paired with delectable plate of sashimi though, as this dish features seafood exclusively.
  • Green tea. Both sushi and green tea gained popularity around the same time in Japan. As a result, green tea has become one of the most popular beverages to pair with sushi. The hot and soothing tea can be a perfect complement to the delicate flavors of the seafood, vegetables, and other sushi ingredients. Unlike other beverages, green tea won’t overpower the taste of your sushi. This lets you fully experience your rolls or nigiri.

  • Japanese beer. If you want something stronger to enjoy with your sushi, then Japanese beers is the perfect complement. Choices such as Sapporo and Kirin Light can help enhance the bold flavors and spices found in sushi and wasabi. Many sushi fans find that their favorite Japanese beer is also a great pairing for the accompanying soy sauce served with their meal.
